My name is Steve Thomas and I have a BSc (Hons) degree in Sport Science, specialising in sports physiology, sports psychology, and sports biomechanics. My education was intense, highly scientific, but delivered a comprehensive knowledge of the total internal and external workings of the human body. Having graduated, and despite the sobering realisation that absolutely no-one in the outside world had even heard of sport science, I moved to London to tackle the fitness industry head on. The world of exercise at this juncture was simple, basic, almost naïve, with the Jane Fonda movement and group based aerobic classes just beginning to flourish. At this time in the evolution of exercise and fitness it wasn’t even universally accepted that exercising was a good thing to do, not necessarily a positive / healthy hobby. There certainly wasn’t an ounce of scientific or medical knowledge anywhere to be seen in any exercising methodologies that existed at this time.
My light-bulb moment came, somewhat by chance, so in the mid 1980’s I introduced a new concept called “Personal Training” to the U.K. Being a Personal Trainer was different, unique, and progressive and it really ‘fed’ the need for personal attention – more importantly, it afforded me the opportunity to use my scientific knowledge to mould exercise programmes that were so individual, so uniquely personal. I understood how and why the human body could move with grace, fluidity, and symmetry but more importantly I could recognise acutely the signs and symptoms that resulted when this human chain of actions and reactions faltered – when it deviated from its slick, well-oiled majestic flow. I had gained a true understanding of how we stand, walk, jog, run, sprint, jump, twist, rotate, lift, bend, and push. I understood the physical and physiological demands of every golf swing, every tennis serve, every rugby tackle, every slam dunk, every somersault, every press-up, and every squat. More importantly, I was a professional specialist in exercise prescription.
My goal, my ambition and my entire motivation was to introduce scientific knowledge into all aspects of health and fitness. My Personal Training career started to flourish, working from grassroots level, progressing to working with some of the world’s elite athletes, and a whole catalogue of the world’s rich and famous. I have amassed over 100,000 one-to-one personal training sessions over the last 37 years, and during this time the whole world of exercise and fitness has been booming – from the hesitant and uncertain beginnings, it has exploded into a $100 Billion global industry, and exercise and fitness have become the holy grail for those seeking physical and mental wellbeing. Throughout the last 37 years I worked tirelessly with thousands of individuals, completing my apprenticeship, and earning my stripes. Moulding my methods, experimenting, and trying all options, ideas, routines, and regimes old and new. I monitored closely how different clients reacted physically and mentally to the various strategies I employed.
With all the diversity and substantial volume, the 100,000 exercise sessions that I have conducted, have enabled me to judge, analyse and conclude countless common themes and patterns of response to exercise that I simply could not ignore. Exercise is about using and enhancing the whole body’s natural, organic, fluid, rhythmical movement patterns, allowing and achieving efficiency, symmetry, proportion and muscle, bone, and joint stability.
I was developing my own style, my own methods, my own philosophy of how to prescribe the correct, efficient, and productive exercise and fitness routines for each individuals unique requirements. My sport science education has allowed me to see things differently, and this is why I have always operated differently.
