Everyone Is Getting It Wrong

As an Elite Personal Trainer for nearly 40 years, I have witnessed first-hand a booming exercise and fitness culture. We have been bombarded with a plethora of exercise choices, from the humble traditional aerobic classes and gym routines of the 1980’s to the more modern high intensity interval training, cross-fit, bootcamps, military training, boxing, spinning classes, Pilates, or yoga. What choices have you made, and why have you made those choices? Do you really know what type of exercises are right for you – should you walk 10,000 steps per day, or jog or run, lift heavy or lighter weights? and do you really know how to lose weight and build your muscles, and how do you decide if you should choose group classes or train at home?

My experience of working with individuals from all over the world tells me that everyone is still guessing. But why is this? – we are surrounded, almost engulfed with different information, new ideas, suggestions, and opinions from individuals that are simply not scientifically qualified to give such advice.

Essentially, we are being taught and guided by the wrong people. The unregulated world of health and fitness has confused, complicated, and even misled every one of us, we must stop listening to, and following self-proclaimed exercise experts, social media guru’s, celebrities, and TV personalities.

This is simply unacceptable, and it needs to change, and it needs to change now. Exercising has become a serious subject, it is not just a hobby anymore, it is an important and integral part of daily physical and mental wellbeing, so we need to be getting our advice from professional exercise specialists.

We therefore all need a FUNDAMENTAL shift in our approach and understanding of how and why to make correct exercise choices. After all, do you really know how to achieve your desired exercise goals? or are you just following your friends or colleagues, and are you just really guessing? The world of exercise is full of myths and misconceptions, vastly differing opinions, that just muddy the waters, and confuse everybody, so even though we know that the exercising world has been booming for decades, do you really know whether you should be running? – is running bad for your knees? should you be cycling, rowing, or swimming? Do you really understand about breathing rate, heart rate, sweating or thirst? and do you know how to stretch, when to stretch? should you do static or dynamic stretching? and why do you get knee pain while running, squatting, or lunging? Why do your ankles hurt after skipping, jumping, or playing various sports? Why do your hips, groin or pelvis hurt every time you do fast intense exercises? why does your upper back, neck or shoulders hurt after press ups, weight training, pull ups or dips? and why does your lower back give you constant discomfort, whatever exercise you seem to do, and do you really understand core stability?

The answer to these and so many, many, more questions, for the vast majority of the exercising world is NO. Essentially everyone is guessing.
